For more than 10 days, thousands of Spring Breakers have been invading Port Aransas. What brings these visitors to town? Why have they chosen Port Aransas over other Spring Break destinations like South Padre Island?

For most of them, the main reason is price. According to them, it is cheaper to find a place here than it is down on South Padre Island.

“We are broke college students, and Port Aransas is a cheap option for us,” a Spring Breaker from Stockdale said. “Everything here is cheaper than it is in Florida, Califor nia, or even in South Padre.” “If you compare the prices between South Padre and here, Port Aransas is a lot cheaper,” a Spring Breaker from San Antonio said. “And the beach is just as nice, but with fewer people.”

Spring Break gives young people an opportunity to travel while sharing the hefty expenses it can incur, especially for students. Corey Calbreath, from Austin, road-tripped in one car with four friends.

“We share gas, food and hotel expenses,” he said. “The beach is always fun. It’s been really great so far. We are having a blast.”

Students also came to town to party, and they know how to do it. Camping, grilling, popping a few beers, playing volleyball or Frisbee…those are just a few things they are doing with their time.

“We chill on the beach, play football, have some fun back at the house,” said Cameron Kurin from Austin. “It’s a hell of a lot of fun.”

“We’ve been here before and we loved it,” a Spring Breaker from Hope, Ark., said. “It’s not expensive, and it’s nice and warm.”

Some of them were aiming for South Padre Island but ended up in Port Aransas instead.

“We wanted to go down there, but we did not have the right directions, so we came here,” another Spring Breaker from San Antonio explained.

Boys, apparently, are finding further reason to pick Port Aransas over other hotspots.

“Girls, man,” explained Kurin. “The girls are always better in Port Aransas. When you go down to South Padre Island, it’s just a bunch of guys.”

“We came down here for the women,” Trevor said. “It gets too crazy in South Padre. It’s pretty chill here, and we are having a good time. You get the same thing and it’s just not as crowded.”

And Spring Breakers even believe police enforcement is tighter in South Padre Island than it is in Port Aransas.

“There are too many cops over there. Here, they are cooler,” Trevor said. “They are here to make sure everything stays cool and they don’t really bother us.”

But students are not the only ones enjoying the Port Aransas beach on Spring Break.

“My parents live here, so we go to their beach house,” explained Sam Ballard. “We come down to spend time with them. The businesses are nice; it’s not too expensive. It’s a great place to come.”

Ballard, who hails from The Woodlands, came to town with his family and his children.

“They like it here,” he said. “ They love the beach and building sandcastles.”

Buddy Crelia and his wife, from Fort Worth, came to town because their grandchildren wanted to. “We brought them down here,” said Crelia. “They asked specifically for it. They came here before and they loved it. For my wife and me, it is our first time and we would definitely come back.”

Spring Break has brought lots of visitors and action to Port Aransas. It has also brought lot of extra work for locals, including police enforcement, those in the food and entertainment industry, and shop merchants. But all of this will be over soon. People will be able to forget the headache that is traffic on Alister Street, the ferry, and State Hwy. 361, and return to their normal, quiet lives in Port Aransas.
