Bond explained

Rotarians get the facts

Rotarian Sharon Doughty, Superintendent of the Port Aransas Independent School District, brought her team to update Rotarians on the “how, what and why” of the $3.5 million school bond issue that voters will decide on May 11.

Doughty addressed the club at its meeting on Thursday, April 4.

Doughty reminded Rotarians that 75 percent of school tax dollars go to the state to be distributed to poorer school districts under Robin Hood. Rotarians learned from Doughty that not only were bond issues for new buildings, but that “Facilities encompass buildings, athletic areas and all equipment used to educate children in our school district.”

She pointed out that 100 percent of the bond issue monies stay in the district, versus the 25 percent of tax revenues the district gets from ad valorem.

Rust is a bigger issue than Rotarians thought when it comes to school buses. To replace a bus with ad valorem tax revenue, it would cost $400,000 compared to $100,000 if paid for with bond money, Doughy explained.
