Be there for candidates

Those of you who have not already made up your minds should make it a point to attend Candidates’ Night tonight.

It will be at 6 p.m. at city hall in the council chambers, 710 W. Ave. A. Yes, it will be broadcast on the public access cable channel, and yes, we’ll have complete coverage in next week’s edition of the South Jetty. No, we will not post a video of it on our Web site – it is too long. In years past, I have made a video of it and made it available to the public – and no one checked it out. So, last year I did not do it. Of course, we had a few requests for it.

So, this year we will record a DVD that can be borrowed from (and returned to!) the South Jetty.

Still, nothing is a substitute for the real thing, and if you’re there, you have the added bonus of talking informally to the candidates after the formal program is concluded.

The whole thing won’t last an hour – you’ll still have time to go out for dinner afterwards if you’d like. Or you can do your laundry, sort your socks, whatever.

Even if you have made up your mind how to vote, it’s worth the time and trouble to see the candidates respond to questions for which they’ve prepared, as well as a few impromptu questions. You might surprise yourself and change your mind.

Candidates’ Night is tough. It takes some moxy for someone to put him- or herself up for election. It takes moxy for them to stand up to questioning before the public.

As difficult as public speaking may be for some people, public speaking to an audience of none is even tougher. So, if you’re supporting one of the candidates, be there for him. If you want to know more about one of the candidates, be there to learn more about him.

One way or another, learn as much as you can about each candidate so that when you cast your vote, it’s an educated one.

Candidates’ Night is one way to become an educated voter.

Oh – we’ll have cookies.

See you there.
