Children involved in the University of Texas Marine Science Institute’s Summer Science program got some lessons at Mustang Beach Airport on how math and science are involved in aviation Monday, June 10. Youngsters received instruction on how an automated weather observation system works. They also learned some things about skydiving, like how parachutes are packed, how a jump point is calculated and more. Colleen McCue, who helps coordinate Summer Science, did a jump with Skydive South Texas, which donated its services for the jump and the kids’ lessons. Clockwise from above: Students pose with instructors for a group portrait; students 8-year-old Claire Montwill of San Antonio, left, and 9-year-old Kathryn Hill of Rockport get a chance to sit in the cockpit of a plane; and a skydiving demonstration is put on for the kids.
