A crane was being used as work on the new University of Texas Marine Science Institute (UTMSI) research pier continued on a recent day. The pier branches off the south jetty. It will replace a pier that earlier was at the same location. A drill ship got loose during Hurricane Harvey and crashed into the older pier, damaging it in 2017. The new pier is expected to be finished by late August, if not sooner, said Sally Palmer, a UTMSI spokesman. The pier’s functions will include continuous water quality and currents monitoring and monitoring for harmful algal species. Palmer said the project’s final cost won’t be determined until final accounting is complete. The work is being paid for by insurance and support from UT-Austin, she said.
