Ashtanga yoga now at JELM

A new class at the Joint Effort Leisure Ministry is set to begin this week.

Dr. Thomas Klepach and Dr. Denise Bruesewitz will facilitate a weekly ashtanga yoga group at the Pollock Center, in the Community Presbyterian Church complex on Tuesday, from 5:15 to 7 p.m.

The class, appropriate for beginner to intermediate levels, will be conducted free of charge. Donations are always appreciated for use of the church facility.

The public is invited to attend and folks should bring their own yoga mat, although a spare or two will be available. Ashtanga yoga is an ancient and established form of yoga, blending stretching, balance, breathing and meditation. A unique feature of ashtanga is the established sequence followed each time, making it conductive to self practice. Once memorized, the practitioner may not need an instructor to know what to do next, allowing for focus on moving into poses more deeply. Despite a set sequence, the practice can be quite flexible and ashtanga can accommodate practitioners with a wide range of ability and flexibility within the same group session, relatively advanced practitioners can be in the same session with beginners.

Continuing at the JELM will be aerobics on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and body toning on Tuesday and Thursday, both at 8 a.m. through the month of April. If enough people are interest in aerobics, the class may continue into summer.
