Animal Rehabilitation Keep fundraiser slated on Sunday

Friends of the ARK is inviting the public to a fundraiser for the Animal Rehabilitation Keep (ARK) on Sunday, May 17.

Food, a cash bar, live music and a silent auction will be held at Ed the Beachcombers, 905 State Hwy. 361, from 3 to 7 p.m.

Admission to the event is $20 per person.

On the menu are a pasta bar, seafood and various appetizers and finger foods.

Proceeds will go to the ARK.

The ARK rehabilitates birds, especially aquatic birds, sea turtles, terrestrial turtles and tortoises. The goal of the facility is to return the animals to the wild.

The ARK is located on the campus of the University of Texas Marine Science Institute.

“Most of the creatures, regardless of their species, are injured because of some kind of human activity,” says UTMSI’s website. “Birds often get caught in fishing lines or hit by vehicles on beaches or the roadside. Turtles can fall victim to fishing lines as well as shrimp trawls and boat propellers. Sometimes the animals have been hurt deliberately. “It’s a costly mission of mercy.

Each month, the ARK purchases 1,700 pounds of fish to feed its patients. There also are veterinary bills and salaries for three part-time workers who clean the tanks, feed the animals and keep the ARK in working order,” the website says. Friends of the ARK is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the ARK by providing education, volunteers and funding.
