Appraisal employees to visit Port Aransas

Are you upset about a high appraisal on your Port Aransas property?

You’ll have an opportunity to challenge the appraisal without ever even driving to the Nueces County Appraisal District’s office Corpus Christi.

Appraisal district officials will set up shop in Port Aransas on Saturday, May 21, to meet with local property owners.

They will be at the Brundrett Middle School gym from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Staff will be equipped with computers and could lower appraisal amounts on the spot, if they end up agreeing with challenges, said Willie Carrington, commercial land coordinator with the appraisal district.

Property owners should bring evidence such as photos and documents to support their cases. Documents could include property closing statements, sales contracts, independent appraisals and estimates and receipts for home repairs that are needed or finished.

The appraisal district is asking that folks bring their photos in the form of prints, not just digital images on their cell phones.

If staff doesn’t agree to lower appraisals to a level that will satisfy the property owner, the owner can sign up for a hearing before the Appraisal Review Board. Hearings will be held later, in Corpus Christi.

Property owners who file challenges will receive notice by mail of when they will need to appear at the appraisal district offices for a hearing, Carrington said. At least two weeks’ notice will be provided, he said.

If property owners don’t meet with appraisal district staff in Port Aransas, they could go to the appraisal district office at 201 N. Chaparral St. in Corpus Christi and meet with an appraiser there.

Landowners also can hire property tax agents to represent them before appraisal district staff and the ARB.
