Online registration for the amateur competition at the 2022 Texas SandFest is open. Amateur sand sculptors are invited to compete during the festival, set for Friday through Sunday, April 8 through 10, on the beach in Port Aransas.
The amateur division competition will take place on Saturday, April 9.
A two-day open competition for both solo and team competitors will be held on Friday and Saturday, April 8 and 9.
This year the two-day competitions have changed to a new classification – open categories.
“The open categories will increase the competitiveness of the category as sculptors from of any level, for-example – amateur, advanced, semi-pro and master level sculptors may register to compete,” said a press release from the organizers.
The open two-day solo and team competitions are for adults over 18.
The competition is limited to 75 plots, and participants may register online at the SandFest website, www.texassandfest.org. Click on the “Get Involved” tab.
Solo age groups include guppy, age 7 and under; youth, ages 8 to 12; teen, ages 13 to 17 and adult age 18 and over.
The team competition is limited to six members per team.
Team age groups include youth, ages 8 to 12; teen, ages 13 to 17; and adult age 18 and over; and family teams of up to five members with only two adult team members allowed.
The registration fees range from $5 to $125, depending on age and competition, solo or team. The registration fee includes a wristband for each competitor for entry into the festival. Extra wristbands may be purchased for parent and non-competitors.
On Saturday, guppies and youth will compete from 9 a.m. to noon, and teens and adults will compete from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Those competing in the two-day competition will sculpt on Friday from noon to 5:30 p.m. and then on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Competitors may check in early on Friday, April 8, from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Volunteer Tent located at the north entrance to SandFest.
On Saturday, check-in is from 7:30 to 8:20 a.m. at the south SandFest entrance.
All work must be done in each competitor’s or team’s designated plot, and only registered sculptors are allowed inside the plots.
Complete contest rules can be found on the SandFest website.
The sculptures will be judged on originality and imagination, degree of technical difficulty and artistic merit.
Winners will be announced at approximately 5 p.m. Saturday in the Entertainment Tent.
Guppy and youth competitors will have awards announced 15 minutes after the competition completion in the guppy and youth area.
