Families in need to get Thanksgiving baskets

Many Port Aransans have a lot for which to be thankful. Many do not. The First Baptist Church and the Port Aransas Helping Hands Food Pantry have joined forces to help those in need on Thanksgiving. A Bible class at the First Baptist Church has raised money and held food drives for Thanksgiving. They have provided meal baskets for 81 food pantry clients.

EMS Toy Roundup under way

The 11th annual Port Aransas Emergency Services (EMS) Toy Round Up is underway. The collection of toys will continue through Dec. 21. Toy Round Up chairman Kristin Barton says that EMS is "desperate to find a location," to store the toys. A climate-controlled, secure storage area of at least 800 square feet is needed to store all of the toys.

A local motel and recreational vehicle park owner is calling for a lowered speed limit along Cut-off Road after a longtime customer and Winter Texan was struck and killed on Wednesday, Nov. 12. Marlin Hardt, an 86-year-old Swea City, Iowa, farmer, was crossing the street about 5:50 a.m. that rainy morning when a pickup truck driven by a Port Aransas man struck him.

High winds and rough seas kept most of the offshore boats in over the weekend, but that doesn't stop the fishing. Again this week the bay fishermen have it going on. Redfish, flounder, trout and Spanish mackerel have all been caught in abundance.

Jack Nielsen, 77, of Port Aransas, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008. Nielsen was born Sept. 3, 1931, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Marinus and Ane Marie Nielsen. He was a teacher and principal in numerous Iowa schools, a systems consultant in data processing, statistics and testing for the Area Education Agency.

Jeffrey Gray Gant, 64, died Friday, Nov. 14, 2008. He was the brother of Jack Gant of Port Aransas. He was born March 8, 1944 in El Centro, Calif., to Jack Allen Gant and Genevieve Gray Gant, while his father was in aviator training there during WW II.
