Photo by Regina Love Team consistency will be key moving forward for the Port Aransas High School cross country teams, according to head coach and athletic director Steve Reaves.

“As a team, we have to get more consistent,” he said. “We have to learn how to give a best effort every day, not only in practice, but in the meets.”

Where the teams will practice consistently is uncertain as the student-athletes bounce back and forth between Flour Bluff and Port Aransas.

“When school re-opens, we will practice in Port Aransas,” Reaves said. “Where will depend on the clean-up process and how far along we are. Right now, it looks like we will primarily be on the beach.”

Port Aransas ISD is scheduled to re-open on Monday, Oct. 16.

With so much uncertainty, Reaves is happy with the way his runners are competing, but feels improvements can be made after his group didn’t run as well as expected in a Sept. 23 meet in Corpus Christi.

“I didn’t think we ran as well this weekend as we did last,” he said. “I know the kids are tired because we have made such a hard push to get back in shape.”

While they may be tired now, Reaves expects the rigorous practices to pay off in the long run.

“Right now, it’s just pushing through all the obstacles and keep getting better,” he said.

Until Oct. 16, the teams will continue practicing at FBHS and although it isn’t like practicing at home, Reaves feels it is going well.

“Practice in Flour Bluff is going about as well as could be expected,” he said. “The kids are working hard, but it’s not home.”

Right now, the man in charge feels his teams are about a week behind schedule due to three missed weeks in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

But he feels they will be ready in time for district and regionals.

The district meet will be held on Oct. 9, and the regional meet will be held on Oct. 23 at a familiar location.

The regional meet will take place at Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi, the same place last weekend’s meet was held.
