Five-day boat class offered

Skilled boat builders will guide youth ages 10 to 18 to build their own wooden boats at a class offered by the Farley Boat Works in June.

The five-day class will be offered in two sessions, Tuesday through Saturday, June 6 through 10 and June 20 through 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Participants in the class will each build their own eight-foot “mouse boats,” a one-person kayak-like boat propelled with a two-bladed paddle.

The boat weighs less than 30 pounds, has a carrying capacity of 200 pounds and is designed to be used in protected waters like lakes, harbors or canals.

The cost of the class is $250, which includes all instruction, building materials and a simple paddle.

Builders are encouraged to bring a friend or family member to help part or all the time.

Students younger than 12 must have a parent working with them at all times.

On the last day of the class, the builders will launch their boats in the harbor and take a little cruise before taking it home.

Class size is limited to four boats per session.
