Refugio gives Marlins rough ride on the road

After hanging around early in a road game at state-ranked Refugio, a big Bobcats fourth inning put the game out of reach for the Port Aransas High School Marlins baseball team on Wednesday, April 12.

In that fourth inning, Refugio scored five runs after leading 4-2 going into that inning. The Marlins eventually lost, 11-2, against the second ranked 2A team in the state.

D’Mond Lafond held Port Aransas to one hit for the night. Lafond pitched a complete game, striking out 14 Marlins batters and allowing just one hit.

Noah Mack pitched 5 2/3 innings for Port Aransas, giving up 11 runs, six of which were earned off eight hits. He struck out five and walked four in the loss. Ryan Brown made a 1/3 inning relief appearance, giving up one hit.

Both teams struggled fielding the ball, combining for nine errors.

Ultimately, the Marlins could not keep up with the high-powered Refugio offense. The Bobcats added a couple of runs in the sixth inning to give them a nine-run lead going into the final frame.

With one last chance in the top of the seventh inning, Lafond quickly closed out the game striking out the side in order.
