Green Team film explores bottled water industry

Bring your clean, sorted and counted recyclable beverage containers (plastic, aluminum and glass) to the next UT Green Team Film Series movie on Tuesday, Feb. 10.

“ Tapped,” will begin at 7 p.m. followed by guest speaker Patsy Gillham, one of the co-creators of the Texas Bottle Bill. The purpose of the bill is to establish a deposit/refund program to decrease the volume of aluminum, glass and plastic beverage containers in the lakes, rivers, bays, bayous, on roadways and public lands.

Texans for Clean Water will give the Green Team and KPAB five-cents per container.

The free film and speaker will be held at the Port Aransas Community Theatre. The PACT, in conjunction with Keep Port Aransas Beautiful, helps the Green Team sponsor this event. The PACT is located at 2327 State Hwy. 361.

The producers of the film provided the following synopsis:

“Is access to clean drinking water a basic human right, or a commodity that should be bought and sold like any other article of commerce? Stephanie Soechtig’s debut feature is an unflinching examination of the big business of bottled water. This documentary is a behind-the-scenes look into the unregulated and unseen world of an industry that aims to privatize and sell back the one resource that ought never to become a commodity, our water. From the plastic production to the ocean in which so many of these bottles end up, this inspiring documentary trails the path of the bottled water industry and the communities which were unwitting chips on the table. A powerful portrait of the lives affected by the bottled water industry.”

The UTMSI Green Team is a volunteer-based group that was established in 2008. It provides faculty, staff and students at UTMSI with the opportunity to discuss environmental issues that affect their department, building/grounds and nearby community. The team works to develop solutions to problems that will result in a more eco-friendly and sustainable environment.

One more movie is planned in the series on Tuesday, March 10.
