Neblett elected chairman of TWIA board of directors
Her fellow board members unanimously elected her chairman during a regular board meeting in Austin on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
Neblett said being made chairman was an honor.
“I am fortunate to be chair at this particular time, when TWIA has undergone such positive change, both in our culture and in our operation,” she said. “I am fortunate to be surrounded by very competent staff and experienced and dedicated board members.”
Asked to elaborate on the positive changes she mentioned,
Neblett said, “I think it’s the processes and procedures for claims, the website and customer service we now provide. And the number of audits that TWIA has gone through while under administrative oversight with the Texas Department of Insurance is proof positive that new management has put us on the correct track.”
Asked about her goals for the board, Neblett said, “I think my experience on other boards is certainly something I hope to bring to TWIA. I am a firm believer in transparency and will assure it continues.”
Created by the Legislature, TWIA is the state’s windstorm insurer of last resort. TWIA’s board deals with policy matters and implements operational plans.
Neblett has been on the board since 2006. She has served in the past as its secretary and vice chairman. She also is director of external affairs at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute, a former mayor of Port Aransas and past trustee with the Port Aransas Independent School District.
TWIA General Manager John Polak said Neblett’s experience with TWIA will serve the board well.
“Based on her knowledge of the situation, this is very good for the board,” Polak said.
Neblett is the first woman ever to serve as the board’s chairman, Polak said.
