PAEF awards record $112,000 in grants

Staff photo by Dan Parker The Port Aransas Education Foundation distributed a total of $112,888.27 among the Port Aransas Independent School District campuses during the 2013 grant awards ceremony. The event was held on Friday, April 12 at the Port Aransas High School.

The grant recipients are as follows:

• Andrea Skloss, $1,833 to attend the 2014 National Science Teachers Association Conference in Boston, one year of Five to Eight Minute Interactive Science Starters for seventh and eighth graders.

• Peter Barello, $1,287 to attend the Advance Placement Summer Conference at Texas Christian University.

• Clare Adams, $7,585, to organize writing camps for fourth graders at H.G. Olsen Elementary School, 10 iPads.

• Danna Alcorn and Gina McKeever, $6,429.50, one Mac- Book and one PowerSync tray to manage campus iPads, iGeek camp: five students from each grade at BMS will become iPad coaches.

• Deborah Hood, $453, one iPad for use with students.

• Gay deMontel, $1,800, fifth grade symphony.

• Ginger Jones, Joe Kocurek, Stephanie Cowen, Kris Jones and Javier Mendoza, $1,990, to attend the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Clinic.

• Jackie Villareal, $1,015.96, five new compound microscopes for Port Aransas High School.

• Janis Moore, $2,016.15, new math materials for the Olsen library and to attend the School Science and Mathematics Association Convention.

• Jill Smith, $2,156.25, chemistry textbook for PAHS.

• Judith Large, Courtney Holloway and Gretchen Baughman, $2,000, science instruments and materials for third, fourth and fifth graders.

• Laurie Barello, $ 1,882, computer science curriculum for three years at PAHS and to attend the AP Chemistry Summer institute.

• Laurie Barello, Pete Barello, Leif Johnson, Melanie Mayer,

Jennifer Stark and Sharon McKinney, $1,800, dual credit courses tuition assistance.

• Marilyn Cook, $1,145, eBooks to teach science, math and geography through kids’ literature and integrating technology in teaching art at Brundrett Middle School.

• Meghan Zigmond, $379.85, printing from iPads and backing up iPad apps at Olsen Elementary.

• Melanie Mayer, $7,000, new books, novels and materials for ELA classes at PAHS and to attend the National Council of Teachers of English Convention in Boston.

• Monica Sonnier, $1,000, Microsoft Office Specialist certification for Principles of Information Technology students at PAHS.

• Nona Hendricks, $537.50, materials to make geometry a hands-on experience in and out of the classroom.

• Pam Voyles, $6,528, material, notions and machine maintenance for high school sewing class, two Google Chromebooks for the high school library and two Google chromebooks for the middle school library; two iPads for the Olsen Elementary library and Library Follett Destiny program - a new system to manage all PAISD libraries, and to attend the Texas Computer Education Association certified Google Apps training program to bring Google Apps to PAISD.

• Pat Coeckelenbergh, $3,828, new material for BMS library.

• Penny Pillack, $5,169.27, 10 iPads for Hospitality and Tourism Classes, attend Hospitality Educators Assoc. of Texas State Conference in Dallas, 10 iPads and smart covers for hospitality and tourism students

• Pete Barello, $15,735.49, Dave Ramsey Personal Finance Course for senior economics Class, USS Lexington field trip for U.S. history students at PAHS, AP Test Study Guides for AP human geography and world history at PAHS, e-textbooks for AP human geography, AP world history, and dual credit U.S. history classes at PAHS, two Apple TV adaptors to be used in all of Barello’s classes, replace VHS movies with DVDs for all Barello’s classes, 13 iPads for AP human geography students, 13 iPads for dual credit U.S. history students, Coin Quest for AP world history students.

• Peter Hagedorn, $453, 1 iPad for use with students.

• Randell Buttler, $4,968.49, upgrades to all machine and safety tools for all shop classes.

• Raul Mendoza, $448.82, 1 iPad for use with students.

• Rhonda Burger, $3,885, 10 iPads for fifth grade.

• Ryan Piwetz, $6,766, Out in Nature! field equipment for environmental systems and AP environmental systems classes, science equipment for physics and integrated physics and chemistry students at PAHS, pool table for hands-on teaching of physics concepts at PAHS.

• Sharon McKinney, $10,079.87, 24 iPads with cases for use by 10th and11th graders at PAHS, attend iPadpalooza, iPad training.

• Steve Reaves, $645.62, to attend Cross Country Coaches Association summer clinic.

• Thomas McHenry, $1,684.95, video conferences for art and Spanish classes at PAHS, art display case.

• Tiara Followell, $6,500, 10 iPads for English II pre-AP, English II and English III students, to attend National Council of Teachers of English convention in Boston.
