TAKS tests haven’t quite gone away yet.

Students at Port Aransas High School will be taking the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, known as TAKS, the week of April 23-27, under a somewhat complicated schedule.

On Monday, April 23, students in the 10th and 11th grades will take the social studies test from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., while ninth- and 12th-graders get a break. The freshmen and seniors are to report to the gym at 12:30 p.m.; third period will run from 12:30 to 1:10 p.m., second period from 1:14 to 1:54 p.m., first period from 1:58 to 2:37 p.m. and zero hour from 2:41 to 3:20 p.m.

On Tuesday, April 24, 10thgraders will take the math test at 8 a.m., and everyone else should report to the gym at 12:30 p.m. Fourth period will run from 12:30 to1:10 p.m., fifth period from 1:14 to 1:54 p.m., sixth period from 1:58 to 2:37 p.m. and seventh period from 2:41 to 3:20 p.m.

Juniors are scheduled for the math test at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, April 25, while others report to the gym at 12:30 p.m. On that date, third period runs from 12:30 to 1:10 p.m., second period from 1:14 to 1:54 p.m., first period from 1:58 to 2:37 p.m. and zero hour from 2:41 to 3:20 p.m.

Ninth- and 12th-graders will report to the gym at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 26, while 10th- and 11th-graders take the TAKS science test at 8 a.m. The bell schedule for the day is fourth period from 12:30 to 1:10 p.m., fifth period from 1:14 to 1:54 p.m., sixth period from 1:58 to 2:37 p.m. and seventh period from 2:41 to 3:20 p.m.

The bell schedule will revert to its regular times on Friday, April 27. No testing is set for Friday.

High school Principal Sharon McKinney said all students who are not testing on a given day must remember to go to the gym on that day. Students who want to buy a cafeteria lunch must sign up the day before; they’ll pick up their lunch at 11:55 a.m. and take it to the gym to eat.

McKinney also reminded students that they won’t be allowed to have cell phones, iPods or any other electronic devices at their desks or on their person in the testing rooms.

Rooms where tests will be administered will be posted outside the school office each morning, she said.
