Turtle release Sunday

The public is invited to watch as Animal Rehabilitation Keep (ARK) workers release five sea turtles back to the wild on Sunday, April 1, on the beach in Port Aransas.

The release will be at 10 a.m. at Mile Marker 35, nearly one mile south of Beach Access Road No. 1.

The turtles will include two large loggerheads. “Sara” was found emaciated and floating off Harbor Island in September last year by kayakers.

The other loggerhead, a 75-pounder that is un-named, was found in distress on a cold day in December near where it will be released.

Three smaller sea turtles of the Kemp’s ridley species also will be released. One was previously released from South Padre Island by Sea Turtles, Inc., and was found six months later upside down in local surf. The turtle is known as UUY925.

Also to be released are an unnamed ridley and one called Valentine that beached on Padre Island National Seashore just before Valentine’s Day this year.
