Despite wet weather, the Lady Marlins whipped Benavides, 21-2. STAFF PHOTO BY CHRISTIE ORTIZ The weather may have been chilly and damp, but there was warmth in the Lady Marlins’ dugout as they recorded a 21-2 win over the Benavides Lady Eagles in their first district outing.

On their home diamond, the Port Aransas girls ripped 13 points in the first inning and followed that with eight points as the game was called after two and a half innings.

Savannah Ortiz again saw duty on the mound, striking out six and walking three batters. She allowed no hits and both Benavides runs were unearned.

“We still have to do a better job of cleaning up our defense,” said coach Steve Reaves. “Offensively, we walked quite a few times. We had seven hits and one strikeout.”

The only extra base hit, a triple, came from Kellie Owens. Ortiz, Brenna Martin, Jordan Morris, Marian Smith, Bakar Sackschewsky and Maddison Ray all had singles.

“We had several hard-hit balls tonight,” Reaves noted. “Hopefully, the bats are starting to come around.”
