The Port Aransas Marlins earned a trip to the regional semi-finals on Tuesday, Feb. 28, with a 51-43 defeat of Medina High School in the regional quarter-final game in Floresville.

Caleb Rogers had what coach Joe Kocurek called “a huge game,” scoring 29 points, including three 3-pointers, to lead the Marlins. Customary scoring leader Tyler Pate followed with six points, along with Jake Roberts. Chase Gustafson, Andrew Groseclose and Connor Collins each put in two points to round out the Marlins scoring.

“Rogers was the recipient of some nice passes from Pate, as (Pate) had an off-night from the floor, but made up for that with strong playmaking,” Kocurek said.

The Marlins had to overcome a 12-point first-half deficit to overtake the Bobcats with four minutes left in the game. The Port Aransas boys used a “swarming defense,” Kocurek said, along with some clutch shooting down the stretch.
