JV hosts tennis tourney, earns ribbons
A junior varsity tennis tournament in Aransas Pass on Thursday, March 1, was added to the Marlin schedule. The varsity did not participate so players could compete in the regional semi-final basketball tournament on Friday, March 2 (see related story).
Players were guaranteed only one match, and the tournament did not field a consolation bracket, according to coach Dante Cage.
Results are as follows: Junior Varsity Boys’ Singles Elliott Morris Lost to Jeremiah Deleon from Sinton, 8-0. Girls’ Doubles First Round Mamta Patel/Emily Klein beat Ward/Day (Ingleside), 8-4. Second Round Patel/ Klein beat Scott/ Garza (Skidmore-Tynan), 8-5. Semi-finals Patel/Klein lost to Chapa/ Reyna (Miller), 8-2. Third place match Patel/Klein beat Cambry Thompson/Samantha McEnnerny ( Port Aransas), 8-4. First Round Thompson/ McEnnerny received a bye. Second Round Thompson/ McEnnerny beat Bruins/ Rodriguez (Goliad), 8-5. Semi-finals Thompson/McEnnerny lost to Bahkta/White (Aransas Pass), 8-1. Third place match Thompson/McEnnerny lost to Patel/Klein (Port Aransas), 8-4. Girls’ Singles Mary McCann lost to Lucero Escutia (West Oso), 8-7, (7-4). Boys’ Doubles Collin Barr/Randy Borden lost to Rodriguez/Perez (Odem), 8-2. Mixed Doubles First Round Hunter Roos/Cathryn Yarbrough beat Maldonado/ Maldonado ( Ingleside), 8-1. Second Round Roos/Yarbrough beat Perez/ Perez, 8-4. Semi-finals Roos/ Yarbrough lost to Hernadez/Rees (Calhoun), 8-6. Third place match Roos/ Yarbrough beat Treull/Jones (Goliad). 8-5.
“Overall, the tournament was great,” Cage said. “We had two third place finishes.”
With three more tournaments to go before district, Cage said, “I am happy with how everyone has done so far this season.
Next on the Marlins schedule is hosting the Port Aransas High School Spring Break Tournament. The junior varsity will play today, Thursday, March 8, and the varsity plays tomorrow, Friday, March 9.
