Rain mars tourney Rain plagued the Varsity Winter Tournament at Port Aransas High School on Friday, Feb. 17. Marlin tennis coach Dante Cage said, “We only got to play the main draw bracket due to the rain.” “We dodged the rain all day until 3 p.m. All of the coaches decided to just leave the matches as is and travel back home,” Cage said. Most of the semifinals and finals matches started, but did not get to finish. Results are as follows: Girls Singles Jessica Borden beat Denise Egressey from St. Joseph’s, 6- 0, 6-0. Borden was down a set and up 5-3 in the second set when the rain came, and the tournament was cancelled. Emily Klein lost her first match, 2-6, 2-6 to Erica Hernandez from Sinton, and did not get to play another match due to the rain. Boys Singles Randy Borden lost to Collin Roberson from St. Joseph’s, 6-7 (11-9,) 2-6, and did not play another match due to the rain. Girls Doubles Shelby Stephenson/Vivian Frank lost their first match, 2-6, 0-6 to Martino/Silva from Sinton. They lost their second match to Maldonado/Gonzalez from Sinton, 4-6, 2-6. Boys Doubles Ty Morris/Paul Voyles lost their first match to Adams/ Gonzales from Aransas Pass, 1-6, 5-7, and did not get to play another match due to the rain. Mixed Doubles Connor Collins/Savannah Guillot beat Harvey/Cox from Orange Grove, 6-1, 6-1. They won their second match against Gallardo/Bluntzer from Orange Grove, 6-2, 7-5, to get into the finals, but did not get to play the finals match due to the rain. Jack Goodgion/Fallon Zollars beat Blankenship/Ramirez from Sinton, 6-1, 6-1. They won their second match against Cole/Stone from Orange Grove, 7-5, 6-3, to get into the finals against Collins/Guillot from Port Aransas, but the match was rained out. |
