Cupid tournament winners announced

The Cupid’s Shuffle Doubles Tournament got off to a wet start on Saturday, Feb. 18. Morning rains gave way to sunny skies and strong winds, and the show went on.

The event is a benefit the Port Aransas High School tennis program.

“Four guys who flew in from Tyler asked me Saturday morning during the rain storms if they could still come out and play after the rain stopped. Several of my tennis players came out and played with the gentlemen. Everyone had a great time and played in the 45 mph wind gusts,” said tennis coach Dante Cage.

The Tyler tennis players were Jerry Atherton, Galen Faulconer, Kurt Massing and Ken Dunn.

They played four 8-game pro-sets.

Atherton accumulated 31 total wins to take first place. Faulconer came in second with 26 games won, even though he beat Atherton in a head-tohead doubles set.

Massing, with 20 games won, took third place; and Dunn, with 19 games won, came away in fourth place.

“I would like to thank these four men for roughing the rain and extremely high winds to play with the Port Aransas Marlin tennis team in our annual Cupids’ Shuffle Doubles Tournament,” Cage said.

Four complimentary dinners were donated by Stephanie Kenigsberg of Jay’s Seafood and Spaghetti Works for the four winners.
