Pride of Port Aransas

I had the pleasure of attending the Port Aransas Lady Marlins area playoff game on Thursday, Feb.16, in Three Rivers. Port Aransas turned out en masse to support the girls, which is one of the great things about our community.

The reason for my letter is to express my admiration for the job the girls did as they represented Port Aransas throughout the year. This team has played with a level of courage and conviction that few gave them credit for at the season’s start. This was a young team, and most considered this a year of rebuilding rather than a season where they would contend for a district title.

On Thursday in Three Rivers, our girls played like the champions they are, and although they did not prevail against Sabinal, they still walked away with pride in a job well done. Our girls lost a tough game against a tough competitor, but what really left a lasting impression on me was how they handled themselves in defeat. Our girls carried their heads high, congratulated the other team and wished them well as they continued on in the playoffs. Thursday evening the true spirit of high school athletics prevailed.

Port Aransas should be proud of the job these girls did this season, and more importantly we should be proud of how these girls represent our community. Each and every one of the Lady Marlins exemplifies the character, honor and values of a champion.
