Beach dash event to be held Saturday

The eighth annual Port Aransas Kiwanis Club Beach Dash is Saturday, Feb. 25.

The race begins at 8 a.m. at Horace Caldwell Pier.

Online registration is still available on the event’s Web site, www.portaransasbeachdash.com, where a downloadable form also is available. Additionally, runners may stop by Mark Grosse Real Estate to register and pay.

Packet pick up is tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 24, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Park Road Storage, 2035 SH 361 and Ashby Lane, and Saturday at race start from 6:45 to 7:45 a.m.

The Beach Dash is held entirely on the sand, and consists of a 5K and 10K run, a two-mile walk, and a Kids’ Dash for ages 0-5 years and 6-10 years.

At approximately 7: 50 a.m. the national anthem is played, then the Kids’ Dash starts. Once participants have run the Kid’s Dash, parents will sign them in to the kid’s tent and run their respective races.

Three bands are lined up to play live music along the courses: Wolf Jaw, Golden Oldies, and the horn section of the Medicare band.

Water stations will be set up at the turn-around points for each race.

Awards are to be presented to the overall male and female finishers of the 5K run, 10K run, and two-mile walk. Additional awards will go to the top three finishers in each age group and will be personalized and mailed after the event. All finishers of the Kids’ Dash will receive a medal and be entered in a drawing for beach prizes.

Entertainment for the kids includes a Kids’ Tent, complete with Lou Cinfici’s traditional Beach Dash Cake, and sandcastle building lessons by master sand sculptor Mark Landrum.

Event organizers are Jana Snow and Tonya May. Snow may be contacted at (361) 438-1380 or janasnow@centurytel.net, and May can be reached at (361) 533-3757 or tbm4267@yahoo.com.
