Phyllis Leffler, a Columbus, Ind., resident spending the winter in Port Aransas, found a message in a bottle at Padre Island National Seashore on Jan. 20.

Five sheets of paper were in the bottle. Messages were written in English on two pages and in Spanish on three pages.

Below are transcriptions of all five pages, with the Spanish portions translated to English.

The pages written in English are exactly transcribed, with all wording, grammar, spelling and punctuation errors preserved. Some words were obliterated, possibly due to exposure to sun or water.

Pages three and four are similarly worded, but one is longer, and written in English, while the other is written in Spanish.

The pages written in Spanish are as well-translated as possible by Leif Johnson, a longtime Port Aransas High School Spanish instructor who said that the act of translation is “an art, and not an exact science.”

 

For Michael Jackson:

Michael, thanks for your inspiration and for so many smiles. Your mehas (a Spanish word, English version unknown) inspired many times. (Word illegible) at least already you are much better than in this trash called the world.

George, a simple I love you. Don’t tell everyone my feelings for you. You are very special for me. The first time that I listened to you sing, I didn’t even know your name or know who you were. I adored you and loved your precious voice. When I saw your aspecto (Spanish word, English version unknown), I adored your temora (Spanish word, English version unknown), your smile and your dark eyes (like mine). I lose myself completely in them. I love you extremely much. Naturally, the people of my age notice “beautiful” people with “bodies,” but you and your voice and many other pretty things make me love you completely. All your locuras (Spanish word, English version unknown) and shenanigans always make me happy. When you laugh, I always begin to laugh with you. When I think that you are already with God, it makes me sad and happy at the same time – sad that you can’t be happy (but) you are in peace and in a better place.
