VFW auction, raffle, dinner Feb. 18
     The Moore McDonald VFW Post 8967 is gearing up for its annual auction, raffle and smoked pork dinner to be held on Saturday, Feb. 18. Events will get underway with the auction at noon, followed by a smoked pork dinner with sides to be served at 4 p.m. Curbside to-go orders also will be available.

Port Aransas gets 2.37 inches of rain
     Port Aransas got some good relief from the drought on Sunday, Feb. 5. Our town got 2.37 inches of rain that day, according to Tony Amos, who is the official weather observer for the National Weather Service in Port Aransas. That’s the most rain Port Aransas has had in one day since Sept. 19, 2010, when 6.9 inches fell here, Amos said.

     Learn all about growing, cultivating and using herbs at the next Port Aransas Garden Club meeting on Tuesday, Feb.14, at 10 a.m. at the Community Center, 408 N. Alister St. The guest speaker is Sharie delRio, “The Herb Lady,” teaching about herb use for gardens and kitchens.

Carnival to follow Mardi Gras parade
     Vehicles of all descriptions, golf carts, bicycles, motorcycles and people will decorate themselves and entertain spectators at the annual Port Aransas Mardi Gras Parade on Fat Tuesday, Feb. 21. The parade is sponsored by the Port Aransas Leisure Society (PALS). A new route is planned, and will be announced next week.

Musical comedy plays Saturday
     Come enjoy a 1951 raucous musical western comedy, “Oklahoma Annie”, at the next Port Aransas Movie Time on Saturday, Feb. 11. Doors will open to the Community Center, 408 N. Alister St., at 6:30 p.m. Marion Fersing will play the piano, and free popcorn will be distributed. The movie begins at 6:55 pm.

Brundrett Marlins
8th grade Ladies end with win
     The Brundrett Middle School eighth-grade Lady Marlins brought their 2011-2012 season to a triumphant close on Monday, Feb. 6, with a 26-16 victory at Pettus. Port Aransas jumped to a 12-5 lead in the first quarter and, despite staying in single digits in each of the remaining quarters, held the Lady Eagles to 11 points during the rest of the game.

      Bay Area Title Services opened shop in Port Aransas on Monday, Jan. 30. Dennis Brewer, vice president and branch manager, has been providing title-related services in Port Aranas for seven years.

     A crowd of folks gathered at Roberts Point Park on Thursday, Feb. 2, to celebrate Groundhog Day and look for Port Aransas Phil. Doug Eisele of Wisconsin, left, discovered the little rascal hiding out at the point overlooking the channel in the park. The sun was shining when Port Aransas Phil was discovered, meaning six more weeks of winter.

Hundreds descend on Civic Center for annual book sale
     Book lovers flocked to the Ellis Memorial Library’s annual fundraising book sale at the Port Aransas Civic Center on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 4 and 5. The sale, now in its 27th year, raised more than $7,750 to be used for the purchase of new books and other materials for the library, said Gail Swenson, co-chair of the sale.
