Chamber deadline is Friday

Six candidates nominated for three board spots

Tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 6, is the deadline for completed ballots for members of the Port Aransas Chamber of Commerce board of directors to be turned in or postmarked.

Six candidates have been nominated for three positions. Only members in good standing who are willing to serve are eligible for nomination, and only members in good standing may vote. Ballots were mailed to members in mid-December.

The six candidates for the three positions are William E. “Bill” Bauder, Deven Bahkta, Angie Huckabay, Bob Petitt, Greg Smith and Ed Wiatt.

Bauder is chairman of the chamber’s marketing committee and is a past president and member of the chamber board. He is president of Resort Group LTD, LLC and has been general manager of Coral Cay Condominiums since 1986.

Bhakta has been serving in an appointed term and is eligible to run for a first term. He is owner of the Travelodge, developer of the Holiday Inn Express & Suites and is a principal in ZIZ Hospitality Inc., the portfolio of which includes nearly 650 hotel units in the Coastal Bend.

Huckabay grew up in Port Aransas and after attending college returned to Port Aransas to purchase The Cypress Tree Boutique.

Petitt has designed and built two restaurants, Port Aransas Brewing Company and Beaches Café & Bakery.

Smith built Pioneer RV Resort in 1995 and is the CEO of Pioneer Resorts Inc., which operates in Texas and New Mexico, and includes three RV parks, a 140-slip marina and a full service hotel. He is on the chamber’s Economic Development Committee.

Wiatt is near the completion of his first year as a business owner in Port Aransas as owner of Coastal Ed’s Coastal Cruisers.

Complete biographical sketches on the nominees are included with the ballots mailed to chamber members.

The three elected will join holdover directors Randy D’Herde, Bilmore & Son; Debbie Dean, Island Moorings Marina; Glenn Martin, Woody’s Sports Center; Linda Halioua, Venetian Hot Plate; Jim Triplett, CCMS; and Wendy Moore, American Bank.

Chairman of the board Suzette Freeman, Port Aransas Realty, has served two terms and is ineligible to run. Betty Turner, Betty Turner Real Estate, chose not to seek re-election.

The results of the election will be reported to the board, and officers will be elected by the members of the board and introduced at the chamber’s annual reception on Jan. 26. The 2011 Citizen of the Year also will be presented at the reception.
