Hummm!

The hummingbirds have ‘been swarming, really swarming,’ at two feeders at the home of Alan Olson for the past two weeks. Olson said he has to fill both of them daily. He noted that northern orioles also stop in at the feeders. The tiny birds have descended on Port Aransas en route to their winter home in Mexico and South America. A mixture of one cup of sugar dissolved in four cups of water and boiled for two minutes, then cooled, is all that’s needed to keep the hummers happy. No red food dye is necessary and is, in fact, not good for the birds. Tony Amos includes a video of hummers at his feeder in this week’s Island observer column.
