Art camp will be ‘Picturing America’

Kids in third through fifth grades are invited to get creative and learn about art at a summer Youth Art Camp, July 4-8.

The Art Center for the Islands will host the camp, themed “Picturing America,” from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the center, 323. N. Alister St. A “Picturing America” art camp was held during Spring Break, but this one will be different, according to art center director Mary Rose.

In the hands- on camp, instructor Marilyn Cook help students explore their creative side using an assortment of art materials in different mediums while teaching art history. Cook was an HEB Excellence in Education Award state finalist in the lifetime achievement category in 2007 and a Bill Ellis Memorial Library, National Endowment for The Humanities grant recipient in 2008. She also received grants from the Port Aransas Education Foundation in 2007 and 2008 for “Schools Attuned” and “A Mind that’s Mine: Neuroscience for Kids.”

Camp cost is $15 and registration with pre-payment is required.

Contact the art center at 749- 7334 or artcenter@centurytel.net, or better yet stop by, to reserve a spot.
