‘Take a Kid Fishing’ caters to families
Parents, take your kids fishing on Saturday, June 4. The 28th annual Coastal Conservation Association’s (CCA) Take a Kid Fishing Tournament provides the backdrop for a family fun day at the coast.
Kids through age 16 can fish for fun and prizes in a tournament designed to teach them the skill and pleasure of fishing. Sponsored by the Redfish Bay Chapter of the CCA, the tournament is headquartered out of Woody’s Sports Center, 136 Cotter Ave.
Events begin with registration on Friday, June 3, at 5 p.m. Registrations also will be accepted before the tournament on Saturday morning. But, those who register on Friday will be treated to an old-fashioned Cajun-style shrimp boil, prepared by Charlie Zahn and Duncan Neblett.
The registration fee for contestants is $10, which includes a membership in CCA and the shrimp boil. Adults fish for free, but will be charged $6 for the shrimp boil.
Every angler registered receives a free rod and reel, compliments of CCA.
Fishing begins at dawn Saturday.
Weigh-in will be held at Woody’s from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department game wardens serving as weigh masters.
Wardens and several other boat owners also will make their boats available to take a group of young anglers fishing. A drawing Friday night will determine who gets to fish with the wardens and in other boats.
A hot dog lunch, sponsored by the Doug Daniells family, and an awards ceremony will begin after weigh-in. Trophies, sponsored by the Port Aransas Boatmen, Inc., will be awarded in more than 200 categories. Every contestant receives a trophy and should make it to the awards ceremony, even if there is no fish to weigh in.
The purpose of the tournament is to encourage parents to fish with their children to expose them to the lifelong thrill of fishing and provide an understanding of the importance of conservation.
Anglers (or their parents) interested in participating in this year’s event may contact either of the tournament’s cochairmen, Glenn Martin at 749- 5252, or Zahn at 749-6687.
