11th Street bond issue gets mandate

69% OK street improvements; voters keep incumbent Donley

STAFF PHOTO BY DAN PARKER Port Aransas voters mandated the passage of a $6.4 million bond issue to improve 11th Street in voting on Saturday, May 14.

Voters also opted to keep incumbent City Councilman Keith Donley in Place 1. He drew 304 voters to the 242 who cast ballots for challenger Monte Sirmon.

Candidates for two other positions on the ballot were unopposed. Incumbent in Place 3, Charles Bujan, was re-elected with 383 votes. In Place 5, newcomer Edwin Myers was elected with 363 votes. Place 5 was open since incumbent Rick Pratt has completed three consecutive terms and may not seek another term, in accordance with the city charter.

Voting for the bond issue were 391 voters or nearly 70 percent of those casting ballots. Voting against were 170 voters.

Voting was fairly light, with 566 casting ballots, including 367 who voted early (including mailed ballots). On Election Day, 199 cast ballots.

Of the 2,998 registered voters, 19 percent voted in the election.

No races on the Port Aransas ISD board of trustees were contested, so no election was held. It is an off year for elections in the Nueces County Water Control and Improvement District No. 4.
