COURTESY PHOTO BY BETH OWENS Port Aransas ISD teachers and administrators got a total of $79,542.07 in grants from the Port Aransas Education Foundation (PAEF) in ceremonies held Thursday, April 7, at the high school gymnasium.

That’s significantly more than the $60,000 the PAEF raised last year.

The 45 grants ranged from $249.33 for texts for interactive geographic information systems (to high school social studies teacher Pete Barello) to $9,995.04 for an entire library that kindergarten through second-grade teachers will use in a comprehensive balanced literacy program.

Although Barello got the smallest grant, he was the big winner both in number of grants and total grants. The PAEF board awarded Barello nine grants altogether, totaling $10,728.69.

Leif Johnson, the district’s technology coordinator, got six grants totaling $5,451.44. Nearly half of that -- $2,065 – will go for a classroom projector with remote control.

Other notable grants announced at the ceremony included:

• $7,800 in four grants of $1,950 each to H.G. Olsen Elementary School teacher Claire Adams, to be used for a two-semester writing academy

• $4,302.39 to be divided between H.G. Olsen Principal Pat Nelson and Brundrett Middle School Principal Gina McKeever for professional resources for a third-throughsixth grade literacy program

• $5,000 to Port Aransas High School English teacher Melanie Mayer for classroom novel sets for grades six-12.

PAEF president Wendy Moore pointed out at the ceremony that 2011 is the fifth year the foundation has given grants for the advancement of education in the Port Aransas ISD, and that those grants have totaled more than $275,000.

“The Port Aransas Education Foundation is committed to actively seeking community support to promote educational excellence within the Port Aransas Independent School District, and I think we are continuing to do that with these most recent awards,” she said.

Port Aransas ISD Superintendent

Dr. Sharon Doughty noted that the PAEF has increased its grant amounts each of the three years she has been superintendent.

“The generosity of the donors to the PAEF is unparalleled in districts of similar size, as well as many larger school districts across the state,” she said. “On behalf of the board of trustees of Port Aransas ISD, I wish to thank the foundation for all they do for our staff and students.”
