Marlins earn first place at UIL district contest
Port Aransas High School UIL academic competitors nailed down first place in district with one competition remaining.
The Marlins earned 455 points through Wednesday, March 28, at the district competition in Woodsboro.
While the Port Aransas oneact play did not advance to the district one-act tournament the following day, Woodsboro still could not earn enough points there to beat the Marlins, said UIL coordinator Laurie Barello.
The district results:
Accounting – Hannah Ferguson Johns, third; DJ Forrest, fifth.
Calculator applications – Matt Fries, fifth.
Computer applications – Brent Ross, sixth.
Computer science (first-place team) – Clark Wilson, first; Ross, second; Paul Voyles, third; Ty Morris, fourth.
Current issues (first-place team) – Shea Rogers, first; Johns, third; Elliott Morris, fifth; Fallon Zollars, sixth.
Editorial writing – Becca Honick, first.
Feature writing – Aaron Kenigsberg, first; Zollars, sixth.
Headline writing – Honick, second.
Informative speaking – Tyler Burns, sixth
Journalism (first-place team) – All students in news, feature, headline and editorial writing.
Lincoln-Douglas debate – Michelle Arnold, first; Cody Angel, second; Burns, third.
Literary criticism (first-place team) – Lily Cartwright, first; April Sutter, second; Claire Jones, third; Shea Rogers, fourth.
Mathematics (second-place team) – Wilson, second; Kelsey Abel, third; Ross, sixth. The mathematics team also qualifi ed as a wild card team in the regional competition.
News writing – Kenigsberg, fourth; Zollars, fifth; Honick, sixth.
Persuasive speaking – Arnold, second; Angel, third.
Prose writing – Kenigsberg, first.

Science (first-place team) – Wilson, first; Ross, second; Abel, third; Jenna Ward, fifth; Chris Eggleston, sixth. Wilson, top chemistry and top physics.
Social studies (second-place team) – Zollars, third.
Speech (second-place team).- All students in Lincoln-Douglas debate, prose, persuasive speaking and informative speaking.
Spelling (second-place team) – Morris, fourth; Marina Milligan, fifth; Owens, sixth. The spelling team also qualified as a wild card team in the regional competition.
