Play ball!
The Port Aransas Little League, including Pony League, will open its 2011 season at the ball diamonds at Community Park on Saturday, April 9, at 10:30 a.m.
The first game will be a T-ball game, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
At 12 p.m., throwers will compete by age group to see who can throw the fastest ball. Throws will be tracked with a radar gun; fastest throws will win gift cards. Age groups are 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 and 15 and older. Contestants will pay $3 for the first three balls and $1 for each additional balls.
At 12:30 p.m., emphasis switches from speed to accuracy. Contestants will throw at a target on the T-ball field, with three balls going for $1. Every contestant will win a prize.
It’s “batter up” at 1 p.m., when the hitting derby starts in the batting cages. Contestants can swing at three balls for $1; again, every contestant will win a prize.
At 1:30 p.m., go for the fence during the home run derby on the baseball field. For $5, contestants can swing at five pitches; judges will keep track of who hits the most over the fence out of five balls. If you’re not satisfied with five, you can buy five more. Ties will be broken by a sudden-death contest at 2:30 p.m.; the winner will get a gift certificate.
Brisket plates will be sold for $5, and the concession stand will be open.
