H.G. Olsen Elementary School fifth graders head out of the University of Texas Marine Science Institute’s marina to get some marine science lessons in local waterways on Friday, March 11. They were aboard the Katy, a vessel that belongs to the institute. Students from throughout the elementary school have been getting all kinds of marine science education for weeks now under Marine Activities, Resources and Education (MARE) curriculum, which focuses on various marine environments and integrates language arts, language development, social studies and art with science and mathematics. The program has been financed by a grant from the Port Aransas Education Foundation. During the week of March 7-11, students from every Olsen classroom went out on field trips to get various kinds of marine science lessons in the field.
