Fundraisers tonight, Sunday to send kids to nation’s capital
Fishing trips and gear, jewelry, paintings, pottery and spaghetti.
Spaghetti?
Yes, but not at the same time as the other stuff. The first few items are among those to be auctioned tonight, Thursday, Feb. 24, from 7 to 10 p.m. during a poker tournament at Bernie’s Beach House.
The spaghetti is the “prize” at a dinner set for Sunday, Feb. 27, at noon, at the Pollock Center behind Community Presbyterian Church, 113 S. Alister St.
Both events are fundraisers for eighthgraders who are headed for Washington, D.C., later this year.
The auction at Bernie’s (adults only, no students) as well as proceeds from the poker tournament will all go toward the trip, as will proceeds from the spaghetti dinner, said Javier Munoz, a sponsor and parent of one of the students.
At the spaghetti dinner ($5 a plate) diners will get, besides spaghetti cooked by eighth-grade chefs, a salad, bread, dessert and a drink.
At least one other fundraiser will feature student participation: A chicken dinner sale in the parking lot of Islander Souvenirs, 600 S. Alister St., on Saturday, March 19. No time has been announced yet for the chicken dinner sale.
Bake sales are also scheduled at the Family Center IGA on Saturday, March 12, 9 a.m. to noon, during Spring Break, and Saturday, April 23, 1 to 4 p.m., on Easter weekend.
The Washington trips allow eighthgrader to see first-hand what they’ve learned during the school year.
