EDUCATION NOTES
I recently attended the Texas Music Educators Clinic/Convention in San Antonio.
While there, I attended a clinic on the importance of music in our schools.
There are many benefits to justify the importance of music in our schools, and I would like to share a few of those that were discussed in that clinic.
1. Creativity - Music opens the horizons of the mind and supports imagination, appreciation and sensitivity. By performing music, the students can express themselves through their imaginations. Listening to the many different genres of music gives the student an appreciation of different cultures. The intrinsic value of music for each individual is widely recognized in many cultures; indeed, every human culture uses music to carry forward its ideas and ideals. I try to expose my students to as many different styles of music as possible. Presently, we are rehearsing music that ranges from a Spanish pasa doble to the music of Lady Gaga.
2. Communication - Music is a language beyond words. Music truly stirs the soul. No words or visual display can come close to the emotional impact of music.
3. Discipline - Music requires a commitment. It is almost impossible to be “partially committed” to music. To perform music, and to do it well, requires a focus of attention that requires mental discipline.
We are fortunate that the school board and administrators in the Port Aransas ISD have always supported the fine arts in our schools. I would encourage people to attend school functions that show the students’ talents, whether it be a band concert, a theatre arts production or an art show.
Jim Cole is band director at the Port Aransas ISD.
