Tennis tourney moved to second Saturday, Jan. 8

The monthly round robin tennis tournament has been moved to the second Saturday of January, Jan. 8, since the first Saturday is New Year’s Day.

The informal “just for fun” tournament will kick off with sign up at 7:45 a.m. Play begins at 8 a.m.

Play is primarily mixed doubles, depending on who shows up.

Entry fee is a can of new tennis balls – players don’t even need a partner.

Players should meet at the courts on Station Street between Beach Street and Avenue C and be prepared to play until about noon. Although there is a water fountain nearby, players usually prefer to bring their own water.

Partners are matched randomly, and the format depends upon the number of players participating.

All skill levels are welcome, although players should have knowledge of the game and the ability to keep the ball in play.

The tournament is sponsored by the Port Aransas Tennis Association and is part of a series of tournaments usually held on the first Saturday of each month.

The association also hosts the Winter Old-Lympics doubles tournament in February to foster camaraderie between residents and Winter Texans. Tournament rules requires that partners’ ages add up to 100 or more. Watch the South Jetty for updates on the event.

On a weekly basis, informal games are played at 7:30 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, and at 7 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday.
