Food drive for needy ends here on Sunday

The VFW Post 8967 is wrapping up its annual Care and Share Christmas drive. But, it’s not too late to pick up some extra food items to donate as you make your way down the grocery aisles.

Collections are still being accepted, through Sunday, Dec. 19.

Volunteers will be on hand at the Family Center IGA, 416 S. Alister St., this weekend to accept donations of nonperishable food items and cash to help pay for perishables, such as turkeys and hams. Donors can look for the volunteers from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 18-19.

Food contributions also may be put in a box at the Family Center or dropped off at the post home, 311 N. Alister St. Cash contributions should be taken to the post.

Providing boxed Christmas dinners to families who would not normally have a holiday meal is the goal of the drive.

VFW members and volunteers will assemble the makings of a meal for each registered family in boxes to be delivered within Port Aransas.

The boxed dinner ingredients will be delivered on Tuesday, Dec. 21.

Eligible families that would like to receive a box of goods to make a Christmas dinner may sign up at the post home by Saturday, Dec. 18. They must provide a name, complete street address, telephone number and proof of residency in Port Aransas. Those already registered with the Helping Hands Food Pantry will be registered automatically, but need to make sure the VFW has a physical address and phone number for delivery.

Someone will need to be home to accept the boxed dinner or arrangements can be made to have it delivered to another location within the city.

Request forms may be picked up at the post home or at city hall, 710 W. Ave. A.

Event co-chairmen David and Karen Davidson are seeking volunteers to help with filling the boxes on Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 20-21, prior to delivery. Anyone who would like to help should stop by the post between 4 and 10 p.m. to sign-up.
