VFW seeks food, cash for Christmas dinners
The VFW Post 8967 annual Care and Share Christmas drive is in full swing.
Providing Port Aransas families in need with a Christmas dinner is the goal of the drive, according to event co-chairmen David and Karen Davidson.
VFW members and volunteers are collecting nonperishable food items to go with a Christmas dinner and cash to help pay for perishables, such as turkeys and hams.
Volunteers will be on hand at the Family Center IGA, 416 S. Alister St., from noon to 6 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday through Dec. 19. The rest of the week, contributions may be put in a box at the Family Center or dropped off at the post home, 311 N. Alister St.
Cash contributions may be mailed to Care and Share, c/o VFW Post 8967, P.O. Box 1447, Port Aransas, TX 78373, or dropped off at the post home.
The boxed dinner ingredients will be delivered on Tuesday, Dec. 21.
Eligible families that would like to receive a box of goods to make a Christmas dinner may sign up at the post home by Saturday, Dec. 18. They must provide a name, complete street address, telephone number and proof of residency in Port Aransas. Those already registered with the Helping Hands Food Pantry will be registered automatically, but need to make sure the VFW has a physical address and phone number for delivery.
Someone will need to be home to accept the boxed dinner or arrangements can be made to have it delivered to another location within the city.
Request forms may be picked up at the post home or at city hall, 710 W. Ave. A.
Volunteers are sought to help with the weekend collection table and with filling the boxes prior to delivery. Anyone who would like to help should stop by the post between 4 and 10 p.m. to sign-up.
