Olsen Elementary School were treated to a visit by award winning author, Doris Fisher on Wednesday, Sept. 22. She read from her books and talked with the students about the work that went into writing them.

One book in particular that engaged the students was “Happy Birthday to Whooo?” in which birth announcement riddles are used to have children guess the animal described, according to coordinator Marilyn Cook.

Fisher spoke with pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade students divided into four smaller groups. Cook said Fisher did a nice job of catering her talk to the age level of students, and the students asked Fisher questions, like what inspired her and what her favorite book is.

Fisher is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and attends conferences in Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Austin, Vermont, New York and Los Angeles. She also belongs to a children’s writers critique group and is a freelance editor.

Fisher’s visit was sponsored by the Port Aransas Education Foundation.
