Runners compete with weather at UTSA meet
Marlin runners in San Antonio for a cross-country event on Saturday, Sept. 18, had a chance to run under some very unusual weather conditions.
Lightning caused several delays, coach Steve Reaves reported, with the athletes being sent to buses to wait out the weather. When officials expected a gap in the weather, they called runners off the buses and sent them on the route.
They were wrong.
“It rained hard the entire race, but the kids had fun,” Reaves reported.
He said weather delays caused all 1A girls and 1A and 2A boys to run in the same race (they were they only divisions that hadn’t raced yet), and all ran two miles. The usual five-kilometer boys’ race was not run, Reaves said.
“Even with all the confusion, a crowded course and wet weather, I am very pleased with how we ran,” he concluded. “Our girls finished fifth, but could just as easily have been second; and our boys finished first by a large margin. It was a good chance to get out and see the other teams in our region and see how we compare. I am very happy with where we are. There is still a lot of hard work to do, but we are heading in the right direction.”
