IFA redfish, kayak tourney slated here this weekend

Anglers from far and wide will gather in Port Aransas this weekend, Sept. 10-12, for the IFA Redfish Tour and the IFA Kayak Fishing Tour. This will be the final Texas division regular-season event for the redfish tour, presented by Cabela’s, and the kayak event, presented by Hobie Fishing.

Both events will be operated out of Dennis Dryer Municipal Harbor and will mark the third of three events for the Texas division and one of six divisions of IFA tour events running from the Carolinas to Texas.

Activities will begin Friday with the Redfish Tour registration from 5 to 7 p.m. at the marina, followed by a captain’s meeting sponsored by the Port Aransas Chamber of Commerce. Anglers will launch from the same location at safe light on Saturday for the one-day event. Check-in times will be assigned at the captains’ meeting.

Competitors in the kayak event will have a registration and captain’s meeting from 6 to 7 p.m. on Saturday with weigh-in on Sunday sponsored by the chamber and Seaworthy Marine. Check-in times will be announced at the captains’ meeting.

Tournament participants compete using artificial baits only. The tour also will cease its cap on the 27-inch maximum length measurement on redfish caught during competition in this catch-photograph-release tournament format.

The redfish tournament will pay 20 places, based on a 100-boat field, plus big redfish, big trout and junior angler awards. The kayak tour awards payouts and expanded fishing opportunities for non-motorized fishing crafts.

The Inshore Fishing Association provides inshore anglers an opportunity to display their talents on intercoastal waterways in a professional format while spotlighting conservation efforts.
