Plethora of painters


Working alongside members of the non-profit organization Animal Friends of Port Aransas, a group of students prepares to paint the exterior of the Port Aransas Animal Shelter a baby blue on Wednesday, Aug. 4. Some 55 volunteers were taking part in Teen Escape, a program of the YMCA of Greater Houston. The program is conducted through an annual service learning mission trip designed to make impacts in Texas communities. This year, in addition to painting the animal shelter, the teen-agers did some outdoor beautification projects at H.G. Olsen Elementary School and Brundrett Middle School. They also spent two days working at a park in Corpus Christi. At least two Port Aransas businesses helped with the animal shelter painting project. The Islander donated baseball caps to the counselors and youths. Bilmore’s donated painting supplies. The YMCA group put only a single coat of paint on the building, due to time constraints. Animal Friends of Port Aransas is looking for volunteers to add a second coat and some paint on the trim. Interested folks should call (361) 749-6166.
