Growing some grass

Landscaper Larry Cooey arranges sod at the corner of Alister Street and Avenue G on Monday, June 28. The
landscaping work was part of the conclusion of a Nueces County Water Control and Improvement District No. 4
project to replace aging underground utilities and move them out of the state’s right of way. The approximately
$500,000 project earlier this year involved digging some big holes from the area of the intersection down the
west side of State Hwy. 361 to Avenue J, said Mark Young, manager of the water district. The utilities included
sanitary sewer lines and water lines. The city also did gas line work. The project included upgrades of water lines
along Avenue J. The landscaping work at Avenue G and Alister Street included installation of a water-conserving
irrigation system that senses weather conditions and adjusts irrigation levels accordingly. The irrigation system was
done by Rainman Irrigation, the landscaping was done by Quality Lawn Care and Landscaping and surrounding
sidewalks were built by Island Construction.
