Latchkey pre-registration underway
Forms due Aug. 10.
The Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department is accepting pre-registration for Marlin Academy, the after-school childcare program that the city conducts at H.G. Olsen Elementary School each year.
Folks who want to pre-register for fall may obtain forms at city hall, 710 W. Avenue A, from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The form also is on the city’s web site, www.cityofportaransas.org. (After logging onto the city’s home page, look at the top of the page, click on “city departments” and then “Parks and Recreation.” Scroll down the left side of the page and click on “Marlin Academy After School Program.”)
(An application form also can be found on the South Jetty’s Web site. Go to the home page and click on “forms,” in the column that runs down the left side of the page.)
Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10.
The Parks and Recreation Department usually receives more applications than it has space in the program each year, so a drawing will be held to determine which children get into the program, said Gary Mysorski, director of the department.
The drawing will be Aug. 11. Parents will be notified by phone and e-mail.
Parents of children selected for latchkey must next complete registration forms at the Parks and Recreation Department office across Avenue A from city hall. Parents also will have to settle any payments due from last year and make a payment for August and September.
Cost is $65 per month for the first child and $39 for each additional child in the family. The August payment will be pro-rated, since it’s only a partial month.
Mysorski said on Friday, July 16, that he still was trying to determine how many children would be allowed in the program this fall. The program had a total of 27 spaces available at the beginning of that year. All 27 slots were filled before the first day of classes, so a waiting list had to be created.
Mysorski said he’s trying to expand the program this year, according to Port Aransas City Council wishes. (See related story, this issue.)
The Parks and Recreation Department is searching for someone to hire to direct the latchkey program. For more information, call the department at (361) 749-4158.
