Achilli
      Eugenie Achilli, a former resident of Port Aransas, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009, in Oklahoma City, Okla. She was 87. Known here affectionately as “The Hat Lady” because of her penchant for wearing flamboyant hats, she was active in many civic organizations, especially the Port Aransas Community Theater.

Skate park to open March 20
      Dude! The new skate park’s opening soon! Construction is wrapping up on the skate area at Port Aransas Community Park, and city officials have scheduled a ribbon cutting and dedication event for noon on Saturday, March 20.

Audit of city finances $731,883 surplus cash
      A recently completed yearly audit has found that the city’s finances are in good shape, and even included a surplus of $731,883 from the fiscal year ending Sept. 30 last year. “I find this extraordinary,” CPA Wayne Beyer told the city council on Thursday, Feb. 18.

Girl Scouts slate cookie sales dates
      Port Aransas Girl Scout, Daisy and Brownie troops will be selling Girl Scout cookies at various locations during Spring Break. The Daisies will have a sales booth at the Family Center IGA, 418 S. Alister St., on Saturday, March 13, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. or until they are sold out.

Romantics in action
      The ROMEOs serenaded their ladies at the annual Valentine’s Day breakfast at Port Royal. They sang love songs, including ‘I Love You Truly,’ and presented each woman with a red rose.

      Those of you who haven’t tended your lawns regularly are getting rewarded for your laziness with carpets of shimmering yellow flowers. While we do mow* what passes for a lawn at the Amos residence on occasion, when the spring flowers bloom we try and leave them alone to grow and grace our garden.
