Parks and Rec to sponsor tour of marine development center
The City of Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a tour of the Coastal Conservation Association/American Electric Power Marine Development Center in Corpus Christi. The center is the first state-operated hatchery and visitor center.
The trip is limited to 40 people. The first 20 to sign up will be allotted a space on the Parks and Recreation Dept. bus. Others may still attend, but will have to follow the bus, carpool or drive on their own.
The bus will leave on Monday, Feb. 22, at 9 a.m., from the Pollock Center, 129 S. Alister St., and will return about noon.
The tour will include viewing eight saltwater aquariums depicting different habitats along the Texas coast.
A tour guide will provide a history of the hatchery and information about the current aquaculture techniques used to rear red drum and spotted sea trout.
From the visitors’ center the tour will follow the progression of aquaculture activities, beginning with the 3,000-gallon saltwater spawning tanks.
Next, the tour will move through the incubator room to view the fish eggs and larvae.
The tour will conclude at the outdoor rearing ponds.
