STAFF PHOTO BY STEPHANIE KENIGSBERG A coin toss on Wednesday, Feb. 10, gave the Port Aransas High School’s Lady Marlins the first seed in play-offs and a bye in the bi-district round of the play-offs.

The Lady Marlins share the District 31-A title with Falls City.

Lady Marlin coach Stephanie Cowen traveled to Skidmore Wednesday morning to find out if her team would have the first or second seed for the next round of the play-offs.

The Lady Marlins will play a warm-up game against Bishop tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 12, in the Doyle Marek Gym at Port Aransas High School.

Tip-off time is 6 p.m.

The warm-up will be in preparation for an area game to be played Thursday, Friday or Saturday, Feb. 18, 19 or 20.

That game will be against perennial 1A powerhouse D’Hanis, which beat Port Aransas last year, or against Junction.

The winner of the area game will go on to play in the regional quarterfinals, likely against Nueces Canyon, Cowen said.

The winner of the Yorktown versus Ben Bolt game will play Nueces Canyon to advance, and Cowen said Nueces Canyon “is pretty-well ranked” in the state.

The Texas Association of Basketball Coaches ranks Nueces Canyon at number 6, and Port Aransas at number 9. Falls City is ranked 17th.

However, the Texas Association of Girls Basketball Coaches ranked Nueces Canyon fourth and Port Aransas fifth in Conference 1A, Division 1.

Three District 31-A teams will be in the playoffs. Two of those teams are Port Aransas and Falls City; Yorktown finished third in the district.

Cowen said she has confidence in the girls, who ended the regular season with a 25-4 overall record and a 7-1 record in district competition.

She said the girls are “pretty disappointed” after losing on Friday, Feb. 5, to Falls City by 2 points, but she said the feeling would have been much worse had the loss been to a second-rate team.

The Lady Marlins finished the regular season with a 25-4 season record and a 7-1 district record. Their only loss in district was to Falls City, whose only loss was to Port Aransas.
